Testimonials

I struggle with the idea of asking for help, and many times earn lower grades because of it. However, belonging to a group of students with similar frustrations, questions, and ideas really helped me open up to ask more in depth questions and to go to office hours. This confidence helped me in other courses as well, giving me more experience talking face-to-face with my professors.

So now that you know you CAN be Preceptor, here are more reasons to be one:

  • Improve your grade in this class and increase your overall GPA
  • Get to know your professor – very important for good letters of recommendation
  • Get to know your classmates
  • Gain and improve academic (critical thinking, learning styles) and professional skills (communication and presentation skills, group dynamics)

Sounds good, what’s the catch?

The catch is that you need to sign up for a 3-unit Preceptor Training course. For many students, this is no problem, as they could use the units. But even if you have enough units already, don’t worry, the training course is often a student’s favorite part of the whole Preceptorship.

Preceptors need training to do their jobs and achieve the above preceptor benefits. Preceptors gain this training by signing up for UNVR 197a or UNVR 297a (for Math Preceptors only), a 3-unit course.

To further understand just what you are getting yourself in to, it is important to make clear that Preceptors work with two groups of people - 1) the Teaching Team and students of the class for which you are precepting and 2) the instructor and classmates in your UNVR 197a Preceptor Training course.
