Testimonials

I struggle with the idea of asking for help, and many times earn lower grades because of it. However, belonging to a group of students with similar frustrations, questions, and ideas really helped me open up to ask more in depth questions and to go to office hours. This confidence helped me in other courses as well, giving me more experience talking face-to-face with my professors.

OK, I want to be a Preceptor, how do I sign up?

Great! Just follow the four-step process outlined below:

1. Find a preceptored course

You may be on this page because you saw a presentation about Preceptors in your class or your instructor asked for volunteers to be a Preceptor. If that is your situation, just skip on down to Step 3.

If your current instructors do not seem to be recruiting Preceptors, check the Preceptored Course List. Look for courses you are registered for, currently taking, or have taken in the past.

2. Contact the Instructor

Once you have found a class that is using preceptors to which you have some connection (you are a student in the class, have take the course in the past, have taken a course from the professor teaching the class, have certain skills/knowledge/interest that would benefit the course) contact the Instructor. Let them know your affiliation with the course and that you are interested in becoming a Preceptor.

If Preceptorships are offered in a course you will be taking in an upcoming semester, you can wait until that semester begins. Most instructors make a short presentation in the first week of class advertising Preceptorships.

3. Apply/Interview

Different instructors have different methods of choosing preceptors. Some instructors choose to have their Preceptors fill out an application and interview for their Preceptorship positions. Whatever the method the instructor employs, motivation is the most important attribute for a Preceptor. If you are interested in the position, talk to the Instructor.

4. Register for preceptor training

Once you have your instructor’s permission to be a preceptor, come in to our office in Kuiper Space Sciences, Room 351 to register.

Below is a description of the different Preceptor Training Courses. Additional registration information, such as hours available and deadlines, can be found on the Preceptor Registration page.
